Description

In this final project of the new Master's program Applied Data Science at Utrecht University, students work in a team on a data project. The students have knowledge of programming in Python and R. All students follow a core course in data wrangling and analysis techniques. They then select from a variety of elective courses in applying data science for Media Studies, Geosciences, Epidemiology and/or Social and Behavioural Sciences.

✅ Key features of the challenge

  • Students per team: 2-3 students. Students work on independent, but related projects in the challenge. Each student writes an independent thesis.
  • No. of hours spent per team: 800 hours
  • Duration: April 22 – June 28, 2024
  • Programma: Master Applied Data Science
  • Supervision: Student teams are supervised and guided by data scientists and a thesis coordinator.
  • Deliverables: Thesis (with practically relevant and directly applicable results) and a presentation at the Applied Data Science student conference, to which supervisors are invited.
  • Company time investment: 12-16 hours

📑 Challenge Examples

Projects can fall in any domain, as long as they are data-driven. Past projects have included imputation of missing data, time series analysis, analysis involving Geographic Information Systems, and prediction with machine learning models, including deep learning.

🏢 Company requirement

  • Any company (startup/scale-up/corporate/incubator/NGO) with at least two founders/employees working full time in the company.
  • In business for at least 6 months.
  • Available dataset (there is time for data understanding / cleaning, but this should not require too much work).
  • Ability to provide supervision by domain experts to the students working on the challenge (e.g. advising on the nature of the data and explaining the background to the problem).

📨 How to apply

You can submit the challenge directly through this website. Please provide:

  • A title that summarises the challenge.
  • A brief description of the challenge (max. 150 words).
  • A brief description of the data (e.g. size, type of data)
  • The size of the team (2 or 3 students).
  • Two or three specific research questions, each of which will be taken up by one of the students in the team.
