Interaction Design Challenge 2026
Let teams of bachelor students help with the design process of a new digital product. They will investigate and propose how the interaction design and user experience of a digital product could look like by creating an interactive prototype.
Description
During the course “c” (Interactive systems design), student teams will create an interactive prototype in two stages, finishing with an interactive hi-fi prototype. They will apply a selection of the human centred design methods that they study in the theoretical part of the course. Project work is supervised by Utrecht University staff, but there are regular meetings with the client organisations (see below). Each design challenge will be tackled by around 6 teams of around 6 students. The prototypes can be used as a starting-point of the actual development phase of the product, service or app.
✅ Key features of the challenge
- Students per team: 6 students
- Number of teams per challenge: 6 teams
- Course: Ontwerpen van interactieve systemen
- Level: Bachelor
- No. of hours spent per team: 400 hours
- Deliverables: Product vision; lo-fi prototype; hi-fi prototype; demo movie; 2 reports
- Company time investment: Your time involvement is 10-15 hours in total (prepare proposal; present the challenge; three interview sessions; attending the final presentation). Note on the interview session: interviews with each team have a maximum duration of 20 minutes, so that a full interview round can be done within 2 hours

- Synapses: interactief netwerk voor interdisciplinaire wetenschappelijke samenwerking (Tinder voor onderzoekers)
- Virtual campus tour
🏢 Requirements for participating organisations
We strongly prefer to work with non-profit institutions and organisations. There should be at least one employee taking responsibility for the organisation’s role in the project. These involve answering student questions, supplying examples, data and background information, arranging interlocutors for the interviews, and if possible access to intended users.
