The Transdisciplinary Global Health challenge is a five-month program, where students from various disciplines collaborate with societal partners on real life health issues. This project will be embedded into the Global Health minor track at the VU.

Description

The Transdisciplinary Global Health Challenge at VU Amsterdam is a five-month collaborative project, embedded within the Global Health minor, resulting in community-based interventions to improve health issues at a local and global level. The purpose of the TGHC is to challenge students to cross disciplinary boundaries and apply their classroom-based learning into practice.


✅ Key features of the challenge

  • Program: All Bachelor students of the VU can apply (to enter the minor students must have obtained 90 credits within their bachelor program)
  • Course: Transdisciplinary Global Health Challenge (embedded within Minor Global Health). Link: Minor Global Health - Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (vu.nl)
  • Students per team: 5-6 students, multiple teams.
  • Duration: September - January
  • Supervision: Student teams are supervised and guided by lecturers.
  • Deliverables: Presentation and report with recommendations. Closing seminar event at the end of the course.
  • Company time investment: 8-12 hours in total (e.g. kick-off meeting, final seminar, etc.)


📑 Challenge Examples

The student teams can work on various different challenges within the topic of (global) health. Last year (2023/2024) students worked on one of the following topics:

  • Nutrition & Female empowerment in Vietnam
  • Mental health & wellbeing of the Hindustani Queer Community
  • Health & wellbeing of homeless people in Amsterdam
  • Healthcare access for undocumented migrants with Amsterdam City Rights Group
  • Trust & Vaccination Campaigns

🗓 Planning

  • 23-08-2024: Deadline for submitting your challenge. Within a few days of applying, you will receive a message if your challenge is approved by the course coordinator.
  • Beginning of September: Kick-off meeting with your student team.
  • End of January: Final presentations (after you are matched to a team, we will schedule the time slots).
